Signs of life in Coleman

A scouting walk through Coleman’s historic downtown, where restoration work, new restaurants and everyday street life share the same few blocks.

I went to Coleman on July 23 to scout, but kept stopping for the life gathering along 17th Avenue.

The town’s coal years are still legible in its brick blocks, timber buildings and hand-painted signs. What interested me was the investment happening inside that inheritance. OneMore is bringing a small, contemporary restaurant to the main street. A few doors away, the Roxy is being restored as a theatre and arts centre after roughly two decades closed. Neither feels dropped in from somewhere else. They feel like people choosing Coleman, then doing the patient work of making a place there.

The photographs are less a record of finished renewal than of the space between conditions. A restored neon sign above locked doors. A cyclist passing a boarded storefront. Fresh hospitality beside old off-sales lettering. The street doesn’t hide its wear, and the new life arriving there hasn’t erased it.
